Splendour Exclusive

It's interesting what goes on behind the scenes at any music event. 20,000+ people at Splendour, enjoying new and old music but does the interesting question, 'What goes on backstage...' ever come up with gig lovers?  FoundMyMusic had the unique and amazing opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes at this Nottingham music festival and we want to share this experience with you. S.A Atkin Services is a family managed partnership based  in Nottinghamshire and East Midlands. SAA specialise in a variety of trades and services to the Live Event and Theatre Industry. It was this company that allowed our FMM representative to help out and take a look backstage. Their primary function for Splendour is to provide the staffing  and management for certain aspects of the festival. Some of their responsibilities include:

·         erecting marquees

·         sighting track way

·         temporary fencing,

·         CCTV camera’s

·         artist/VIP hospitality equipment

·         signage and emergency equipment provision.

·         arena and Park lighting.

Backstage and outside the festival they have a team responsible for transporting artist and their equipment to and from each stage. This is the team FMM joined for the experience.

From 2pm, our representative, was behind the scenes. Music is important and Splendour varies in genres of music. This year the headliners include Tom Odell, Happy Mondays and the BoomTown Rats.

The Scenes At Splendour's Main stage

"Being backstage made the musicians feel more real. It was unforgettable and I felt more comfortable there than in the festival crowd. Meeting them and talking to them on the same level of the hierarchy really opened my eyes. The staff at Splendour made me feel at home too. They're all so nice! This is definitely the  industry I want to work in!"

Billy Lockett -

An acoustic artist who was playing at Splendour's acoustic stage. The crowd was small to start of with because his set times (19:30 - 20:00) clashed with the Happy Mondays as well as Reverend & The Makers set but within 5 minutes into his gig, he was grasping the attention of everyone in the courtyard! Playing the best of his songs (in my opinion), Balance and Old Man, he finished on a classic - the Ho Hey song, by The Lumineers.

 TOM ODELL -

Tom Odell was nominated by the FMM team as best performance which wasn't really a surprise. Briefly meeting Tom earlier in the day and backstage (as well as seeing his pink tour bus), made us realize how down to earth some musicians are which is definitely portrayed in Tom's music. This gig however, didn't have Tom's full dream team. With Max Goff, Max Clilverd there, I was surprised that the traditional drummer, Matt Ingram, was not performing although, Tom and the guys were still unstoppable. As well as the cool, respectable presence they brought onto the stage, Tom's set was phenomenal. His set included his new song, 'I Want to Be Yours' (Alex) and his amazing hits, 'Another Love', 'Grow Old With Me' and 'Hold Me' as well as a beautiful solo, just Tom and his piano. The solo was originally by one of Odell's heroes, Elton John and the cover was of one of Elton's hits, 'Your Song'.

"The atmosphere he created was phenomenal! I could feel the music and when he played 'Another Love' - wow - When he plays the first few notes and the crowd cheers. My goodness! When you listen to that one song live and it just gets to you!"

GALLERY47

A unique voice took over the acoustic stage when the first half of FMM's work placement was over. Gallery47 is a Nottingham based artist who hypnotized the audience with just his guitar...

" Splendour is a lovely festival to play, particularly if you're an artist from Nottingham or the surrounding area. It's a nice introduction to bigger crowds and there's always a great, friendly atmosphere at each of the three stages. It was a pity about the rain this year but nobody seemed to mind too much in the end! "
